Exploring Colors for Your Home: Gray

Exploring Colors for Your Home: Gray

As I sit on my red couch painting my fingernails a fantastic smokey gray I can’t help but think about what a wonderful color gray can be in a home. Sometimes people are hesitant to use gray in their homes because they think it will be too heavy or moody. When in actuality, gray is a great neutral color, a soothing color that’s perfect for the home. Grays can be used on their own in different shades or as a clean backdrop for a pop of color. My current obsession is navy and marigold with gray or coral/red and gray. Continue Reading »

Exploring Colors for Your Home: Blue

Exploring Colors for Your Home: Blue

Last week we discussed the color green and how to add it to your home. This week we are exploring one of my least favorite colors, blue. I have actually come to like blue more since the rise of nautical decor inspiration, but up until that point I pretty much despised the color blue. Weird, right? Green, red and orange have always been my favorite colors and for whatever reason I never liked blue. That has all changed now, thank goodness because it’s a great color and very versatile with all of the various shades. I still tend to lean towards blue-green shades but I must say there is also something so fantastic about a rich, royal blue. Continue Reading »

Typography as Art in the Home

Typography as Art in the Home

I LOVE typography, love love love! I cannot get enough of it. I think it’s beautiful, artistic, creative and inspiring. All too often I believe it is overlooked as art in and of itself. It can make a great statement piece for your home. Today I want to give you some ideas of how you can incorporate typography into your home. Continue Reading »

Ikea Finds

On Monday, my sister and I made a run to Chicago to visit the nearest Ikea. There were a few mishaps on the way down but we eventually made it there, enjoyed some Swedish meatballs (which I’m pretty sure violate everything I learned watching Food, Inc.) and got our shop on. I have only been to Ikea twice now but both times I thought it was a blast. It’s like going to Target but ten times the size and ten times the deals! I wanted to share some of the finds that we purchased. Continue Reading »

How to: Create a Bunting

How to: Create a Bunting

Up until a couple of weeks ago, I had no idea that those cute little fabric flags were called buntings. Here is an adorable photo of a bunting. Buntings can be made out of fabrics, paper, plastic, felt and I’m sure a million other materials. A girlfriend and I are currently in the process of making buntings for her summer wedding. She is having her wedding this September at a beautiful location in Oshkosh, WI that has a very nautical theme. Buntings can be used for birthday parties, graduations, baby showers, weddings or decor in your home. The bunting I made for myself was for our master bathroom. Buntings are a natural fit for bathrooms because they are nautical in feel and fit well with bathroom decor. Don’t be afraid to use lots of colors and fabrics with different textures, this is what makes buntings whimsical and fun in my opinion.

Random Light Shade Tutorial

Random Light Shade Tutorial

Many of you saw the light fixture I made and posted to Facebook a couple of weeks ago. This light fixture was my iteration of the Random Light by Moooi which sells for $605. I love the light, not the price tag. So I set out to make my own. I will tell you that it took a few shades to even come close to what Moooi has created. The perfect sphere shape is difficult to achieve and even more difficult is the string wrapped so that it is not too heavy in one area versus another. The one area where we are still having difficulties is sourcing and creating the lighting components. For this reason, this tutorial is only for the creation of the shade. The final product is beautiful and could be used for different things, see this blog for an example of a wedding usage. Please feel free to email me if you have questions, jessica @ babyfoodscoops.com.

Saturday Reflection

Highlight: I have been wishing for a full length wall mirror for our back entry hall for what seems like years. Er.. it actually has been years. In my defense, it is a tough space to fill — the diagonal wall is nearly 5 feet wide, so many beautiful mirrors fell out of contention due to not being substantial enough to fill the space.  Initially, I did find a beautiful bronze mirror at Hobby Lobby that I had placed on my Christmas list for the past two or three years. Christmases came and went.. Aerogardens, Microwave Bacon Crispers, and American Flag Sweaters.. but no mirror. Santa was missing my heavy hinting.
One frustrated Tuesday morning last November, I found myself standing in the bathroom, teetering in my high heels on the edge of the bathtub, attempting to determine if these shoes did indeed match my outfit (not something you want to notice on the walk from the car to your office..). I declared aloud to whoever could hear me (hello, neighbors..) that “THIS IS THE LAST STRAW! Santa is bringing me that mirror!” I cleaned the stroller and carseat out of the back of my car and drove to Hobby Lobby to bring home said mirror, only to discover that the very product I had had my eye on for the past 24 months was now no longer carried in the store. Really?!
